Pantone Colour of the Year 2021

For over 20 years, experts at Pantone Colour Institute have been influencing the world of interior design, home furnishings, and fashion. This year, like no other, two colours have been selected as the ‘Colour of the Year’. Ultimate Grey and Illuminating Yellow have been announced as leading colours for 2021. Those two colours will replace the 2020 blue trend. According to Laurie Pressman, the vice president of the Pantone Color Institute, they will “anticipate what’s going to happen next”.

2020 will be remembered as a year of a global pandemic and economic crisis. With a new year coming in, many of us expect positive changes – and that is the philosophy behind Pantone’s new contrasting colour.

” The union of an enduring Ultimate Gray with the vibrant yellow Illuminating expresses a message of positivity supported by fortitude. Practical and rock solid but at the same time warming and optimistic, this is a colour combination that gives us resilience and hope. We need to feel encouraged and uplifted; this is essential to the human spirit” said Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director at Pantone Colour Institute

In this blog post, we will go more in-depth with each of Pantone’s new colours. Consequently, we will point out some of our favourite products so that you can easily incorporate those trends into your home.

1.PANTONE 17-5104 Ultimate Gray

Ultimate Grey Pantone colour

The “Ultimate grey” is a light grey colour that represents solid, natural elements. For instance, pebbles on the beach bring us feelings of “composure, steadiness, and resilience”.

Grey interiors and designs have been a big trend for the past few years. From monochromatic modern interiors to light, minimalistic Scandinavian rooms- grey is here to stay. It is one of the most versatile colours and will coordinate with almost every palette.

For example, when paired with vibrant shades, grey creates a beautiful contrast and harmoniously resonates. In addition, it is a perfect foundation for colourful accents, a backdrop colour that will allow bright accessories to pop.

2.PANTONE 13-0647 Illuminating

illuminating yellow colour

The Illuminating is a vibrant yellow colour that just screams happiness. The Pantone Colour of the Year should remind us all about better times ahead. The colour will bring positive energy, optimism. Meanwhile, it will contrast beautifully against neutral shades.

“Illuminating is a bright and cheerful yellow sparkling with vivacity, a  warming  yellow shade imbued with solar power.”

We associate yellow shades with cheerful and joyful feelings. That’s why it’s a perfect colour for accent pieces. Furthermore, the yellow colour will add some interest and warmth to a room. For instance, you can start slowly by adding small decorations such as yellow cushions, throws, or lampshades. If you really want to brighten up and uplift your room integrate larger elements such as blinds, curtains, or furnishings.
